"Service Saturdays" at Hope Lutheran Church Once a month, usually on a Saturday, Hope's Service Team sponsors "Service Saturday." Service
Saturday provides Hope's members and friends with a way to organize a group of volunteers to help others in our community. Some of the more recent activities have been: Capuchin soup kitchen service,
helping out families at the Ronald McDonald House, helping out residents Botsford Continuing Care, a gardening project for an elderly resident of
Southfield, helping with a block party for nursing home residents in Detroit, and sponsoring a movie matinee for Whitehall Nursing Home residents. If you have any ideas for "Service Saturday" opportunities,
please contact Jessica Beamer through the church office. Upcoming Service Saturdays Saturday, March 18 -
Members of Hope will travel to Wayne County Family Center in Westland, and will be interacting with the children who live there. Volunteers will play games, read stories and share snacks with the kids. This is a great activity for families with children of all ages. The group will leave Hope at 1:30 PM and return by 4:30 PM.
Wayne County Family Center works in partnership with Lutheran Social Services of Michigan and Wayne County, offering transitional shelter for homeless families, as well as help finding a permanent home,
financial planning and counseling. Donations of snack items are needed and gently used children's games, books, coloring books, crayons, colored markers and craft paper are also requested.
Saturday, April 1 -
South Oakland Shelter is a moveable homeless shelter for individuals who are seeking work or are currently employed and within weeks or days of having earned their way off the streets. The South Oakland Shelter is sponsored by churches, synagogues and businesses of South Oakland County, Michigan, working together with local service agencies.
Nearly 29,000 people in Michigan are homeless and families make up 40-50% of that figure. On an average night in Detroit, more than 9,500 individuals and families are homeless. Each year, our sister congregation,
Antioch Lutheran in Farmington Hills has provided a week of shelter and food for the clients of SOS. This year, Hope Lutheran will be taking responsibility beginning Saturday evening, April 1 and ending Sunday morning,
April 2. We will need members of Hope to do the following: * Prepare the Saturday evening meal. * Set-up, serve and clean-up after the meal. * Provide evening activities and entertainment. *
Volunteers to pick-up clients from the South Oakland Shelter Office in Royal Oak and bring them to Antioch on Saturday evening. * Four adults willing to spend the night at Antioch to serve as chaperones (at least one
male). * Set-up, serve and clean-up breakfast on Sunday morning, April 2. Saturday evening dinner preparation begins at 5:00 PM and dinner is served at 7:45 PM with evening activities/entertainment and
involvement lasting until about 10:00 PM. At least five adults and approximately 15 others would be needed for this part of the evening. Overnight volunteers would need to arrive by 10:00 PM on Saturday.
Sunday morning, April 2 requires two volunteers to set out breakfast beginning at 5:30 AM, and finishing clean-up around 7:30 AM.
Drivers will be needed Saturday evening to pick-up clients and bring them to Antioch. Many Hope members have helped Antioch with this project in the past and have found it to be a rewarding and worthwhile service
project. Many of Hope's youth have also taken part. Please consider getting yourself and your family members involved in this event. |
