Still hungry?

This year, our congregation has been focusing on hunger.  We’ve done a road rally, fundraisers, food drives, a rice meal, a prayer vigil, and experienced global music and food.  During Lent, we’re hoping to dig even deeper into the issues surrounding hunger and poverty through a number of education opportunities.  Four classes will be offered for adults, and one for children.  We hope you’ll be able to commit to one of these five-week classes.  It’s a short term commitment that can truly make a long term difference.

There’s also plenty that can be learned right from your home, utilizing resources from the internet.  Take a few minutes to check out one or two of these websites.  Learning more about hunger makes us much more effective advocates for change in the world!

www.bread.org  Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. By changing policies, programs and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, they provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities in which we live.  Their website has a wealth of information for learning more about the issues of hunger and poverty.

www.elca.org/hunger  ELCA World Hunger is a comprehensive and sustainable program that uses multiple strategies—relief, development, education, and advocacy—to address the root causes of hunger and poverty.  Their website provides activities and articles for people of all ages.

www.sustainabletable.org  Sustainable Table celebrates local sustainable food, educates consumers on food-related issues and works to build community through food.  The website includes articles about sustainability, recipes, and shopping guides.

http://www.elca.org/Growing-In-Faith/Ministry/Partner-Related-Organizations/Lutheran-World-Federation/How-We-Serve/Resources/Food-For-Life.aspx  Food for Life: Recipes and Stories on the Right to Food, is a book containing global recipes adapted for North American cooks plus stories of how people in the Lutheran family work together to improve lives and address root causes of poverty and hunger.  This website provides additional information and study resources—check out the short bible study entitled “A Little Taste of Scripture.”

www.fbcmich.org  Want to know more about hunger in Michigan?  This site from the Food Bank Council of Michigan includes reports about who’s hungry right in our neighborhoods.
